Losing a passport abroad is stressful, but it is manageable when you act in the right order. Your priorities are to document the loss, contact the nearest Indian mission and protect your identity and travel status.
Immediate steps
Search safely and block misuse
Check with the hotel, airport, transport operator or local lost-property office, but do not delay reporting if theft or misuse is possible.
File a local police report
Report the loss or theft to local police and obtain the report or reference. Ask how to get an English copy or certified translation if necessary.
Contact the nearest Indian embassy or consulate
Use the official mission website—never a number copied from an unverified directory. Explain your location, nationality, urgency and planned travel.
Apply for the appropriate travel document
The mission may accept a replacement/reissue passport application or, in an urgent return-to-India case, consider an Emergency Certificate after verification.
Restore local immigration status
Ask the host country’s immigration authority how to replace or evidence the lost visa/residence permit before leaving.
Coordinate airline and onward travel
Do not assume a police report alone is enough to fly. Confirm acceptable documents and update bookings only after the travel-document plan is clear.
How an Indian mission can help
Indian embassies and consulates can verify identity and nationality, accept applications for replacement passports, issue an Emergency Certificate in eligible urgent circumstances and provide consular guidance. They can also direct a distressed Indian citizen to appropriate local services.
An Emergency Certificate is generally a one-way travel document to return to India. It is not a substitute for a full passport for ordinary onward international travel.

Requirements vary by mission and case. Verification can take time when the traveller has no copy or supporting identity evidence.
If your visa was inside the lost passport
A replacement Indian travel document does not automatically recreate a foreign visa. Contact the host country’s immigration authority for exit formalities and the visa-issuing authority for replacement or reapplication rules. If you have onward travel through another country, verify transit requirements again.
Protect yourself before every trip
- Store encrypted scans of the passport photo page, visas and insurance.
- Leave copies with a trusted family member.
- Save official mission and insurer contacts offline.
- Carry spare photographs separately from the passport.
- Do not hand your passport to unauthorised agents or as a deposit.
